The land for Legacy Park was deeded to the City by Shamrock Development in 2017 as their park dedication contribution along with a cash contribution for the Legacy development. The funding for the park was paid at the time of final plat with design of the park occurring in 2018 and construction in 2019. Additionally, the City sought a number of grant opportunities to fund the construction of the park, thank you to these organizations for their generous contributions:
- McKee Foods: $20,000
- MN Energy Resources: $10,000
- Vermillion Watershed: $5,000
The remaining funding for the project was paid through the park dedication fund, the total cost of the project was $457,962.
Legacy Park was designed to incorporate the natural topography and passive nature areas to provide nature play elements in addition to more traditional playground features. There are trail loops, a picnic shelter and green space at the park as well.
What Are Park Dedication Funds?
The Park Dedication Fund is sustained through required Park Dedication Fees that developers must contribute at the completion of a new development. The required fees can be satisfied through a cash contribution, land dedication or a combination of both in some for instances. If a park space is not planned for a new development, the fees are collected in cash that can be utilized for new park construction and/or limited improvements. This and more information can be found in Lakeville's City Code.
What is the Adopt-A-Park Program?
Adopt-A-Park is a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter, identify safety hazards and to freely communicate other issues associated with a particular park.
Program Guidelines
Adopt-A-Park is open to community groups, civic groups, churches and individual citizens for a minimum period of one year. Commitments may be for a longer term, preferably at least two years. Park sites are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to past Adopt-A-Park participants. For more information about adopting a park, contact Lakeville's Parks Administration by email.
