In February, 2011 Jane and Joe Miller donated the equipment for an 18-hole disc golf course and staff began the planning process for a disc golf facility. Input from disc golf enthusiasts was sought to determine the best location for the course, of the four locations that were identified, Kenwood Trail Middle School was the most optimal. Staff worked with Travacomp International, Inc. and Paul Kennedy from DG by Design on a concept.
In September of that same year, City staff sought approval from City Council to move forward with the construction of the course and enter into a Joint Powers Agreement with Kenwood Trail Middle School to manage operation of the course. While the school district owns the land that the course is on, the City owns the course and is responsible for maintenance and other improvements.
Substantial completion of the course was completed in 2011 and final adjustments were made in 2012 after feedback from experienced disc golfers and other users. The success of the project can be attributed to volunteers from eagle scouts, church groups and local disc golfers. The total cost of the project was $23,875.50 not including the equipment donation from the Millers.
