In 2013 the Dakota County Board of Commissioners adopted the Lake Marion Greenway Master Plan (PDF). Once completed, the greenway will travel 20 miles through Burnsville, Savage, Credit River Township, Lakeville and Farmington. The greenway will link the Minnesota River and Minnesota River Greenway to Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, Ritter Farm Park, Lake Marion, downtown Lakeville, South Creek and downtown Farmington where it will connect to the North Creek Greenway.
A feasibility study for the Lakeville corridor of the greenway was completed by Dakota County in 2021. The study focused on the proposed trail segments from downtown Lakeville into Ritter Farm Park and ending at 185th Street. The greenway segments within Lakeville will eventually connect multiple destination areas, local city parks and schools to greater regional trails. Construction of the Lakeville segments of the greenway commenced in 2022 and is ongoing.
